How much math theory will I need to program PHP?

I want to teach myself advanced PHP, MySQL and XHTML/CSS (I already have these pretty much down). How much math is actually involved? I have a pretty good handle on it up to Calc II — past that it’s beyond me. Most of the tutorial websites that I have looked at have not been very adequete and have actually been a waste of time. Where can I go to find the best ones for intermediate-advanced that dont go over basic stuff?

You really don’t need much beyond basic algebra… and even then, it’s the computer doing all the work. You just put in the equations.

Though if you’re using it for a website, you’re really not going to use much math at all. I maintain 10 decent sized sites all written in PHP, and the only thing that really gets into any math at all is the site with an events calendar.

PHP is more about logic than math (good thing, too, seeing as I damn near failed Calc 1 and didn’t take any more after that… LOL).

How To Build Your Own Website - More Steps

How to make HTML/php program for register and login?

Please tell me how to make login and register form on a website?

Go to http://www.web2coders.com and download the free "login script"!
It has all the features you need and is easy to adapt.
(Sorry: con’t put it here: it intails a "little bit" more than other solutions presented here!)

Web site design question - advanced programming?

I am interested in creating a voting function that would basically work like the thumbs up thumbs down on sides like Y!A or YouTube. Ideally this vote would result in an immediate update to change a net score and possibly set a cookie to prevent someone from voting for the same item multiple times.

I know how do do this using PHP and MySQL, but the results would not be displayed until the next time the page is refreshed. I would also like to avoid a page refresh between each vote. Basically I would like the person to be able to scroll down the page click to vote and be done with it.

I’m not asking for specific information about how to do this, just ideas to point me in the right direction. Would you do this with JavaScript or some other technology?

To have a thumbs up thumbs down voting system without refresh requires AJAX.
It is not "that" complicated and I will give you the solution, but it is going to take an hour or two.
Go to http://www.web2coders.com tomorrow or later today: I’ll put up a "Voting Script" in the free scripts section. It will be a Zip file to download (images, voting.css, index.php, voting.js, Sajax.php).
A lot of people have asked for this
I have implemented it in "www.namibiaanswers.com". Have a look!

Viable Options for Beginning Web Developers

Webhosting - Which Operating System?

There are basically two operating systems out there to choose from when you select a web hosting provider - Windows or UNIX. LINUX is a derivative of UNIX and is most commonly found in the hosting world under the RedHat label.

But which one is the best?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Both have their supporters and detractors too. I have to admit that I am squarely in the LINUX camp.

Why? Let’s look at some of the features and benefits of both.

The Windows servers integrate Microsoft programs such as FrontPage, Access and MS SQL (not to be confused with MySQL). They also offer specific programs such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic Scripts and Cold Fusion that make web hosting a breeze.

Most important, Windows servers can be easily managed and multiplexed due to .NET technology. They provide excellent levels of support, security and integration for the Microsoft family of products. But note - Microsoft is not Open Source, and almost all of the Microsoft Products have licensing requirements. There are very few ‘free lunches’ associated with Windows hosting. This does not make it a good option for small businesses.

The UNIX platform is mostly represented by LINUX in the shared hosting world. Their most important characteristic is that they can handle large volumes of traffic, are robust and capable of hosting multiple sites. Moreover, they are very flexible and webmasters can customize their services in real time from any computer. Also, unlike Windows, UNIX system is not limited to special remote administration program. Any computer connected to the Internet can access a typical UNIX system without special or costly software.

Many webmasters choose UNIX or LINUX servers because of the server uptime. It is not that Windows servers do not promise 99 per cent uptime. But to achieve it the web host has to be extremely capable and proficient in Microsoft systems. This is not a limitation in the case of UNIX servers.

In summary then, the biggest advantages of LINUX hosting as opposed to Windows hosting are the following

1. LINUX hosting is much more cost effective than Windows hosting for small to medium businesses getting into the Internet arena. This is equally valid for personal or hobby websites. You are going to have to pay licensing fees (or more expensive hosting to cover the lisence fees) if you opt for Windows Hosting.

2. There are tons more free scripts, tools and utilities available for PHP and MySQL than there are for ASP. Just as an example - on the Hotscripts site where there are thousands of free scripts available, there are over 15000 scripts available for PHP, which is the dominant software that runs on Linux hosts (where ASP runs on Windows hosts). The amount of scripts available in ASP and ASP.NET combined is just over 5000. Most of the Open Source (in other words, free to use) tools and utilities have been written in PHP and MySQL.

If you want to easily install and run shopping carts, forums or blogs - Linux hosts that offer PHP and MySQL is the answer.

An Introduction To Web Hosting Affiliate Programs

The Internet or World Wide Web is one giant interwoven collection of websites. These websites are hosted on servers on computers round the globe, using their hosting capabilities to display each website’s files that contain text, HTML, XML, PHP and / or some other source code, images, graphics, audio and video files and more. And those who offer hosting solutions generally offer a variety of business opportunities with plenty of money-making potential like web hosting affiliate programs and business hosting.

Web Hosting Affiliate Program

When a hosting provider sets up a web hosting affiliate program, those who sell the hosting to others through their affiliate link can earn a profit for their sales effort, generally a monthly fee, based upon the percentage of the sale.

For example, you can host your website with a affiliate hosting company and once you sign up, you are able to participate in their affiliate program. Add an affiliate link, a link to the site with your affiliate code embedded in it, so that any sales ring up under your own account ID. Once sales occur, you receive residual income for each month your referral remains a regular paying customer.

Set up your own website about the importance of web hosting and how to go about it, then promote it using your affiliate links in everything. Then you’ll have a small business with your web hosting affiliate program, earning you extra dollars every month.

Business Web Hosting

There is more than one type of hosting out there. You can get small 1-page sites and web hosting packages for sites growing up like individual sites, medium-sized and large-sized sites, business web hosting with all the bells and whistles - and about any type of hosting in between. Usually difference in web hosting packages involves the main features like the disk space, bandwidth and monthly price you pay. But equally important to many are the number of domains you can host, sub domains, FTP accounts you can have, whether or not Fantastico modules are present offering a lot of extra tools and scripts for web builders (like Help Desks, Content Management solutions and much more).

In order to choose the best business hosting package for your needs, start by asking for hosting referrals form fellow business associates. Then compare what each has to offer, comparing offerings to what your own business hosting needs are. Then allow some room to grow and choose accordingly, selecting a plan that fits your budget and offers plenty of support.

Do I need solid programming (VB,PHP, Mysql) knowledge to become a Web designer?

I am a beginner of web designing. I am familiar with Dreamveaver, Flash, CSS, Fireworks, Photoshop, Imageready. But I need to know is it enough for the web designing carrier.

looks like you got mixed up with web developer. with what you know, you can basically be a good designer. In my office we have a designer specifically with the knowledge you have and absolutely no knowledge of php, asp or any other server side languages.

be a master of your current skill set and you can go ahead in the web designing career. good luck to you.

Does anyone know in php programming how to indent like you would in a paragraph….?

and how to remove a line when doing graphs..i want one line with the name and with astric star in category beside it but want other part of discription underneath with the astric star remaining on the same line as the top word..but with remaining words underneath that in same block of the graph..i hope this makes sense and someone could help!
HB~I’m trying to do a graph..i know how to do most of it..i guess i’m using html..but what i am trying to do is find code to indent bracket something whatever and i’m trying to figure out how i keep astric star on same line as name for example coca cola and have what it consists of underneath without the astric star moving that has been put in under DV% on same line as coca cola..the ingredients i want underneath but without a line seperating..i want to be able to put in same block..do you understand what i’m trying to say!?

You’ll use html to do this, not php. PHP would be used to generate the values dinamically, on the fly, but the formatation, that’s still html.

You can build it visually using dreamweaver or frontpage and then add php tags to add a dinamically value to each litle part that is needed. For example, if the name is coming from a database, php would do that.

Or, if you explain better, I’d be able to help you more.
