Hi, I am new to php programming , how can I mantain a global variable which can be updated and read from any page of my website.For Example a user is member of many team (team_id) and after login to my website and selecting one of team ,I want to reuse the TEAM_ID in all other visited page and the variable value should change once user move to other team. I don’t want to go with COOKIES as all browse doen’t have enabled cookies.

Most people use sessions (however underneath the surface that does use a cookie to store the session id)

If you really don’t wanna use that, you should pass the variable to the other pages by attaching them to the URL (HTTP-GET)

Your URL would look like this: http://somesite.com/page.php?team_id=114

I started with Perl a couple of years ago, and found it really simple to learn – but had a few problems with images. I’ve also heard that PHP is ‘the hacker’s choice’ since it is supposedly easily to poison SQL, and that it is insecure since you don’t chmod the php scripts. Is this true or is it fiction?

I think it’s always worth it to explore and learn new languages, no matter what, every new language teaches you ‘something’ even if you decide it’s not for you. It won’t take long either, PHP is amazingly simple, you could literally pick up enough to be writing some reasonably complex web apps in a few days. PHP and PERL aren’t very similar at all, but it’s important to keep in mind that they were built around different philosophies. As for the insecurity issue, I don’t feel that’s really a language issue, you just need to brush up on PHP security and how to avoid SQL and code injections. Insecurity is the fault of the coder, not the language. I’ll drop a link to a lovely little PHP/MySQL tutorial in my sources, it should get you started.
