I have a MySql Database and I am looking for a good easy to understand script in php that will interact with my Database and pull the information to a new Microsoft Excel file.

Please attach any good links you know of. Thanks!

Excel can read CSV files; these are very easy to write in PHP:

I am new to programming all together. i know minimal HTML but i have an uncle who works for the Obama web site and he recommended I take up php instead of c and c++. Where should I start? Is there another language i should start with or should i get better at html?
I should mention that I was leaning towards C languages for the possibility of working with tmore stand alone programs. But my uncle pointed me towards web design which would probably be a whole lot more enjoyable (at least to me) And now I am curious about the aforementioned PHP as far as what to know before takng classes for PHP itself. Any prerequisite type stuff? all great answers so ar… very helpful thanks and please if anyone can lend a minute share your insight.

Depends on where you want to go with web design…

If you want to have a flexible career and be on the more entertaining side of life, then stick with PHP / MySQL. If you want more "stability"–insurance, benefits, etc.–then you will want to learn those other languages like C#, JAVA, etc., because the bigger shops use these technologies more so than PHP and the like.

…You can learn the (X)HTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.0 stuff any day of the week as this is not nearly as complicated as the aforementioned.

In the end, however, it truly matters not for the hammer is only as good as the carpenter who wields it.

I just installed a .php script onto my web server and when I go to run the program, instead of the program running I get a pop up window wanting to save the file on my hard drive. I re-uploaded the files to make sure everything was done correctly, but I still get the error message.

Can someone please help me out – I really need to run this program.

make sure your host supports php. if it is a free host, alot of them DO NOT support php, however there are a few such as 000webhost.com that supports PHP and will work for you.if it doesnt it will only allow downloading of the file

I have one PHP program which use mysql database. I want t the output to be opened in EXCEL/OpenOfficeSpreadsheet(in a separate window) when I click on a link provided. Any option to do it other than to save it as a CSV?The problem with CSV is that it opens as a single column and I have to use text to columns option to convert into columns. Thanks in advance.

CSV is Comma Separated Values

Means if you use values with comma as separator, Excel will open in in multiple columns
