How can PHP programming help one to restart a career after a long break?
im sure if your looking at most needed jobs in the market place, they will be VB.Net, Java & C++ . These are most common per most companies in any area (mostly), other languages are also used, but not as Highly used as those 3.
But you need to look in the paper and find what jobs are looking for in your area.
I think PHP is a little helpful, but it’s more than learning a language. A language won’t let you get a new job. Look at cragislist for your area and figure out what jobs are available. Then, build your skillset to match the new job market. If PHP is hot in your area, then great. But, you need a ton of new media skills to keep up with the kids nowadays.

Just start building applications, start with simple db interaction, then go to login system with cookies and sessions, then build some mini content management system of content pages, then build some images gallery, then use some objects and basically you are ready to go as now whatever your employer will ask you will be able to do or learn
