In the few computer sciences classes I took (long ago), I really liked the fact that assignments built on one another, getting progressively more complex. I now want to learn PHP and MySQL, but I’m having a hard time finding a good set of programming exercises to work on in building my skills. Can anyone point me to some PHP/MySQL programming exercises (or a book that includes exercises) that start with the basics and work their way up?

Do PHP coders actually use this? I heard it was pretty hard…. also I was wondering if big sites use this also. All I remember is seeing a blog entry by an experienced coder and he was basically saying that it is harder than it looks.

I just don’t understand the practicality of it all. Wondering if sites like digg.com or another really big site (like Yahoo answers) uses it. And, of course I mean with PHP.

One of the books I was thinking about buying was the beginner php book by Andy Harris. The only thing stopping me from buying it is I don’t know if I would have to buy another book on top of that or if I could just read php tutorials online and understand them after reading the book.

And also I’ve read the reviews on the php game programming book by Matt Rutledge and the reviewers said that it doesn’t teach much about programming games with php.
